Last term students took a morning module studying the composition of landscapes, perspective through colour, the weather of Constable and Turner.
In their next painting module the students are painting from their imagination and learning how to use colour and form to express more feeling. My interest in Indian music, their ragas which can define this, and my playing of the sitar seemed to be an opportunity to help create a space in which the pure sound of the notes, unlike the songs and melodies of Western music, are different enough to suggest no more than a mood to the listener, and hopefully inspire the paintings. We are painting sounds!
