GCSE results

At Elmfield our students sit their GCSE/iGCSE exams over two years, taking up to 4 subjects in Class 10 (typically English Language, Mathematics, Spanish and German) and up to 5 subjects in Class 11 (from a range that may include Combined Science, Psychology, English Literature, Fine Art, Drama, Music, History and Geography).

This is so that they can also continue to study the Steiner Waldorf Curriculum and it also means that their focus is not solely on examinations.  Our students typically go onto local sixth form colleges such as King Edward VI College in Stourbridge, Haybridge Sixth Form in Hagley or Colleges of Higher Education such as Halesowen College and Kidderminster College.

Pupils, parents and teachers at Elmfield School are celebrating an impressive set of GCSE results. After several years of disruption and uncertainty, our students have been deservedly rewarded for their dedication and hard work.

As to be expected in a school which puts significant focus on language and oracy, there were particularly strong results in both Spanish and German. There was likewise excellence to be seen in the Humanities, with 100% of pupils achieving Levels 9-5 in Geography and History, and in the Creative subjects where pupils excelled in Music, Drama and, especially, Art with 60% achieving Levels 9-8. Furthermore, 100% of students achieved 4+ in English Language, with 50% achieving a ‘Distinction’ for the Spoken Endorsement.

Pupils are now looking forward to beginning a new chapter in their lives at a variety of Colleges and Further Education settings. As Ofsted recently noted: “pupils leave school well prepared for the next stage of their education.”

Commenting on the results, our School Lead, remarked: ‘I am delighted for our students and for the staff who helped them achieve such impressive grades. These results are the first since 2019 to be based purely on external examinations. This cohort had their learning significantly disrupted by Covid and had to adapt to new remote and ‘blended’ learning styles over the last two years, which makes their achievements even more remarkable. It’s a testament to the commitment and resilience of Elmfield’s pupils and staff, and I wish the class of 2022 all the best for the next stage of their academic careers.’

Whilst a full complement of GCSE subjects are, very, successfully delivered at Elmfield, the school offer is about so much more than qualifications. That such results are achieved without any overt exam pressure, nor interminable assessments, is extremely noteworthy. The Waldorf Curriculum is delivered alongside these subjects to ensure a breadth and depth of education increasingly absent from more ‘traditional’ classrooms.

I am deeply grateful for my Waldorf education, which woke me up and helped me rediscover my imagination.
